Solving Two - Step Equations

Step 1 (Solve) - All your trying to do is isolate the variable.

So first you add -4 to +4, then add -4 to 10, because if you

do something to one side, you have to do it to the other.

A + 4 = 10

A + 4 -4 = 10 -4

A = 6

Step 2 (Check) - Rewrite your equation, replace the variable

with whatever number it equaled. If your answers are the

same on both sides then you are correct.

A + 4 = 10

6 + 4 = 10

10 = 10

B - 2 = 5 B - 2 = 5

B - 2 +2 = 5 +5 7 -2 = 5

B = 7 5 = 5

3c = 21 3c = 21

3c/3 = 21/3 3(7) = 21

c = 7 21 = 21

Step 1 (Solve) Step 2 (Check)

w/3 = 6 w/3 = 6

x3 w/3 = 6 x3 18/3 = 6

w = 18 6 = 6

2j + 1 = 9 2j + 1 = 9

2j + 1 -1 = 9 -1 2(4) + 1 = 9

2j = 8 8 + 1 = 9

2j/2 = 8/2 9 = 9

j = 4

f/3 - 2 = 1 f/3 - 2 = 1

f/3 - 2 +2 = 1 +2 9/3 - 2 = 1

x3f/3 = 3x3 3 - 2 = 1

f = 9 1 = 1

first you use reverse operation and eliminate the +4 with a negative 4

when you eliminate the +4 all you have left is a

A=6

Sub. 6 for all the a's you see

A+4=10

6+4=10

10=10

use reverse operation to eliminate the -2

B-2+2=5+2

what you are left with is

B=7

Sub. 7 for any b's you see

7-2=5

3c/3=c

21/3=7

c=7

3(7)=21

3x7=21

18/3=6

for these ones you have to eliminate the addition and subtraction before the multiplication and division.

2j+1=9

2j+1-1=9-1

2j=8

2j/2=j

8/2=4

j=4

Check

2(4)+1=9

2x4=8

8+1=9

9=9

f/3-2=1

f/3-2+2=1+2

f/3=3

3x f/3 =3x3

f=9
