Measures of Central Tendency

Measures of Central Tendency
-A value that represents the center of a data set
-Can be the mean, median, or mode

Data Set- is a number that you must arrange in order from least to greatest

Median- the middle number in a set of data after the data have been arranged in ordereg.
median of 2,5,6,8,9 is 6

Mode- the frequently occurring number in a set of data
mode and most have 4 numbers
-mode of 3,5,7,7,9 is 7
-mode of, 2, 4, 6, 6, 8, 11 is 2 and 6
-mode of 1, 2, 3, 5 is no mode
-mode of 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 is no mode
-mode of 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4 is 1, 2 and 3

Mean- a measure of a central tendency, the sum of the set of value divided by the number of values in the set
mean of 6,4,8 is 6
4,6,8
4+6+8=18

Range-The positive between the largest and smallest values in a data set
Range of 4,5,5,6,9,1,3,5,8,6
1,3,4,5,5,6,6,8,8,9

Outlier-a value that is much larger or smaller then the other data value
the data set may have more then 1 outlier or 0 outliers
outliers are 1,67,67,67,65,100

Orders of Operations

B-brackets. ( )
E- exponents.
D-division. ÷
M-multiplication. X
A-addition. +
S-subtraction. -

Now these are the Rules:
Rule 1- First you check to see if there is any brackets in the math question.
Rule 2- Then you check if there is any exponents in the math question.
Rule 3- Now if there is division or multiplication start from left to right.
Rule 4- Last but not least if there is addition or subtraction start from left to right.

EG.
2+3X4=

2+12=

14=

Homework:

1.
Annie has asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 ÷ 2. She claims the answer is 3.85. Do you agree? Explain why or why not.
1.7+6÷2
1.7+ 3 (since 6÷2=3)
1.7+3=4.7

2.Put brackets in the following expression to get the largest value possible. What problem strategy did you use?
3 X (2.8) + 6.4÷4)=10

3. Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression.
Anthony goes to the store to get a sandwich the sandwich is $3.50,he also took a juice box the juice box is $1.50 he also took 1 granola bar for $1.75 each and he also took a bag of chips, the chips cost 1.50. What is the total of Anthony's purchase going to be?

3.5 + 1.5+ 1.5 X 1.6=
3.5 + 1.5+2.4=
5+2.4=
7.4=
