Integer Review

This is an exam review for integers

Negetive number represent values below 0 and positive number represent values above 0.

Real life examples are sea level (above or below sea level) and temperature (above or below 0 degrees)

1+(-2)=(-1) is a addition statement

3-(-1)=4 is a subtraction statement

Opposite Integers have the same numeral but different sign Eg. 3 and (-3)

Know what a (+)+(+)= + (-)+(-)= - (+)+(-)= + or - (-)+(+)= + or - (+)-(+)= + or - (-)-(-)= + or - (+)-(-)= + (-)-(+)= -

Pratice with different numerals in each situation

Write an addition statement for the following diagram

5+(-12)+4=(-3)

Equation

Equation- mathematical statement with two expression that have the same value

Eg.

Model: 8 times a number plus 4 is 12 8n+4=12

5y-6=19

numerical coefficient =5

variable =5

constant =6

C+(-3)=(-6) Brackets in this equation is use to reduce confusion.

Opposite Operations

A+1=3

A+1-1=3-1

A=2

Sub A+1=3

2+1=3

3=3

reverse order of operation

4c-4=17

4c-3+3=17+3

4c=20

4c÷4=20÷4

c=5

sub 4c-3=17

4(5)-3=17

20-3=17

17=17

Divisiblility Rules

Today in class we talked about different kinds of diagram.

Carroll Diagram- is a table used to show how numbers are the same and different

Example

Use Carroll Diagram to sort 30, 79, 162, 3996, 23517, 31974

A Venn Diagram shows relationships between groups of numbers

Example

Use Venn Diagram to sort 93, 540, 955, 8060, 67982, 84430

Common Factor

A number that two or more numbers are divisible by

Example: 4 is a common factor of 8 and 12

Find the factor of 24

Find the factor of 32

Find the common factor of 24 and 32

Find the greatest common factor

The common factors are 1, 2, 4, and 8.

The greatest common factor is 8.

Homework:

Find the factors of 18

Find the factors of 30

Find the common factors of 18 and 30

Find the greatest common factor of 18 and 30

Here is a link about Venn Diagrams.

This is a video about finding the greatest common factor between two numbers.

Remember to study for the quiz tomorrow!

Probability Question

Ricky flipped a coin, spun the spinner below, and rolled a regular dice. Organise all the possible outcomes into a chart, a table or a tree diagram that shows all the sample space.

Area of Triangles

Today in class we learned about area of a triangle.

First we drew a 4x6 rectangle on a centimetre grid.
Then draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner and cut along the line
We have made 2 triangles that has the exact same area.

We determined that not all triangles are half of a rectangle, but all triangle is half of a parallelogram.

We also determined this to be the formula

Then we did show you know in the textbook

A= BxH÷2

A= 3x3÷2

A= 4.5 cm2

A= BxH÷2

A= 4x6.5÷2

A= 13 cm2

Order of operation

I am going to talk about Order of Operation. Order of Operation is the order you do a math question in. The order is BEDMAS.

B-brackets
E-exponents
D-divisions
M-multiplication
A-addition
S-subtraction

Eg.

This is a link that will help you with order of operation.
This is a video about order of operation.

Homework:(

1. Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 ÷ 2. She claims the answer is 3.85. Do you agree? Explain why or why not.

I don't agree with her because
1.7+6÷2=
\ /
1.7 + 3=
\ /
4.7
2. Put brackets in the following expression to get the largest value
possible. What problem solving strategy did you use?

3 x 2.8 + 6.4 ÷ 4 =
3 x (2.8 + 6.4 ÷ 4) =13.2

3. Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression.
2.5 + 1.25 + 5 x 1.6 =

Johnny went to the store to buy school supplies. He bought a notebook that cost $2.50, an eraser that cost $1.25, and 5 pencils that cost $1.60 each.

2.5 + 1.25 + 5 x 1.6 =
\ /
2.5 + 1.25 + 8=
\ /
3.75 +8=
\ /
11.75
